Kelly Ann Photography is a commercial photography studio, which means a very diverse group of clients. We photograph anything from small animal vets to optometry offices to casket fabric embroidery companies to animal feed producers. One thing remains constant: our clients want us to tell a story about their industry, their products and services, and their people.
American Battery Solutions, Inc., in Springboro, OH, hired us to capture their manufacturing process. Their facility is large and open with industrial lighting and machinery with pops of bright color.
From pre-shoot discussions with our ABS contact, we knew that they wanted product beauty shots as well as shots throughout the facility showing assembly and team members at work.
After a quick safety briefing, the team donned their safety glasses and headed out onto the floor. As we’ve discussed in previous posts, industrial photography has many challenges. But we have the experience to face them head on.
We worked from beginning to end on several lines, following battery assembly from start to finish.
While the primary goal is to capture the process end-to-end, there are many opportunities in an industrial shoot to vary angles, zoom in for close-up shots, change depth of field either for interest or to highlight specific parts or processes, and capture the sheer magnitude of the facility and the assembly line. These shots are not often included in a shot list; they are an added benefit of hiring an experienced and creative industrial photographer who has worked extensively with digital designers and marketing departments and understands their needs.
To conclude the shoot, we photographed all of the batteries in their finished form. While the final images are clean and beautiful, they are not simple to create. Black is difficult to photograph and plastic or metal surfaces with any shine are extremely hard to capture without significant reflection issues. Not only is lighting tricky, but the focus on every inch of a product must be crisp, creating another challenge. This means that multiple photographs must be taken and then seamlessly layered to create a perfectly lit image where every element is clear.
The ABS website features many of our photographs. Our final delivery provided them with images that can be used for marketing, training, website content, press releases, technical manuals, trade shows, brochures, and so much more.
